Abstract

Geriatric oral care needs has been increasingly accepted as the most important issue among special dental needs. This subject has not yet become a registered specialty in Korea, but it is very encouraging that Korean Academy of Geriatric Dentistry has prepared to provide a training program with certificate to certain eligible clinical dentists. Geriatric dental patients are to be categorized and approached into three broad functional status, that is, functionally independent older adults, frail older adults. and functionally dependent older adults. Predoctoral geriatric curriculum should also embrace some experience of each of three categories of patients, various case mix of geriatric patients. To do that properly interdisciplinary coordination should be established. Educational researchers has much thing to do, including, for instance, comparative analysis and feasibility evaluation of various innovative geriatric education examples.
